Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp imitation vanilla 1/2 tsp if using clear vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3 cups all purpose flour add 1/4 cup to this for cutout cookies

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment, cream shortening and sugar.
  3. Scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl, then add eggs, vanilla, and milk and mix.
  4. Add in the dry ingredients on low speed mixing until dough forms, scraping down the sides of the bowl and making sure everything is incorporated.
  5. For Drop Sugar Cookies: use a cookie scoop or metal spoon to drop dough balls onto the cookie sheet. Bake for approximately 10-12 minutes.
  6. For Cut-Out Cookies: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface or lightly floured silicone mat. Using cookie cutters, cut out dough, then place them on the cookie tray.
  7. Bake cookies for 9-12 minutes or until done. Check at 9 minutes. Add time if needed.
  8. Place baked cookies on a wire cooling rack when done.
  9. Allow to cool completely before frosting them.

Notes

Each oven is different. I recommend checking the cookies at 9 minutes. If they need more time go the full 12 minutes.
Make sure they are done enough to take off the cookie sheet with a spatula without falling apart. But you do not want your cookies to be golden brown or they will be hard.
