Oreo dirt pudding is the perfect dessert for birthday parties, special occasions, potlucks, family gatherings, or a sweet treat at home. It is very easy to make using common ingredients and is guaranteed to impress kids and adults alike.
It’s been a family favorite dessert at Mama’s house for years. Let’s dive into how you can whip up this easy dessert in no time!
Ingredients
- 16 oz package of Oreo cookies
- 1/2 stick of butter softened ( I use salted butter)
- 3 cups of milk (2% or whole milk)
- 2 boxes of 3.4 oz Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix
- 12 oz. Cool Whip
- 8oz. Cream Cheese softened
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla (I use imitation vanilla if you use real vanilla only use 1/2 tsp)
- 1 cup of powdered sugar
Kitchen Equipment
- Food Processor
- Large mixing bowl
- Medium Mixing Bowl
- 9×13 glass dish
- Whisk
- Hand Mixer (or stand mixer)
- Spatula
Step By Step Instructions
- Prepare the pudding: in a large bowl combine the instant pudding mix and milk by whisking briskly for about 2 minutes, then set aside in the refrigerator.

- Crush the cookies: in a food processor crush Oreos until they are fine crumbs. Set aside.

- Cream butter and cream cheese: in a medium bowl with a hand mixer (or you can use a stand mixer) cream butter and cream cheese until combined and smooth.
- Add sugar and vanilla: then add powdered sugar, and vanilla to the cream cheese mixture. Mix until well blended.

- Combine mixtures: Next, gently mix the cream cheese mixture with the pudding mixture until smooth.

- Add whipped topping: Then gently fold in the whipped topping with a spatula until it’s evenly distributed.

- Assemble the dessert: Use a 9×13 glass dish for the easiest and quickest method. Pour the entire pudding mixture into the dish making one pudding layer only. Then, add all of the Oreo crumbs making the top layer.

- Cover and chill: If your casserole dish has a lid that fits, place the lid on and refrigerate overnight or until it’s time to serve. If not, use Press-And-Seal wrap or plastic wrap to cover it.
- Plan ahead for the best results: I love making this dessert a day in advance so it’s perfectly chilled and ready to serve. If you are unable to do this, make sure to refrigerate it for at least 1 hour before serving for that refreshing cold texture.

Notes
Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Do not over-mix the whipped topping it will get soupy. Just make sure it's evenly distributed. Also, if you freeze your whipped topping do not thaw it so much it's soupy.
If you need your dirt pudding dessert quicker, you can simply refrigerate it for an hour and serve. It will not taste as amazing as the one that set overnight but it will still taste good.
If you are gluten-free you can use gluten-free Jello Vanilla Pudding and gluten-free Oreos.
If you can not have chocolate you can sub golden Oreos.

Variations and Extra Thoughts
- Another fun way to make this Oreo dirt dessert is to use individual cups, preferably clear cups: add a scoop of the pudding mixture to the bottom of each cup to make “dirt pudding cups”. You can also mix it up for your special occasion or birthday parties by putting gummy worms in them for the kids to make it a fun dessert.
- Layer this Oreo dirt dessert in a trifle bowl instead of a casserole dish to make it prettier.
- You can use a rolling pin to crush the Oreos into fine crumbs if you do not have a food processor. Simply put them in a gallon baggie and roll them pin over them.
- Use golden Oreos if you do not like chocolate and would rather have “sand pudding” (that’s what my son calls it. That’s his favorite dessert!)
- Use instant chocolate pudding instead of vanilla for a richer, chocolaty flavor. You could also add chocolate/chocolate Oreos.
- If you are gluten free this recipe is still for you. Simply switch out the regular Oreos for Gluten Free Oreos and make sure to use Jello Vanilla Pudding mix or any gluten free pudding mix.
