Whatever you do, do it heartily as unto the Lord! Have you ever heard this saying and wondered what it meant? Same! I used to hear this phrase when I was younger when I didn’t feel like doing something and quite frankly, I didn’t like hearing it. I would think what in the world is that supposed to mean anyway?!!
There are so many things in this life that we just don’t feel like doing. Someone may ask us to do something that is out of our comfort zone. They may ask us to do a task that we most certainly do not want to do. There are seasons in life when we may not have time or don’t feel like we can put one more thing in our schedule. So how in the world can we do anything heartily unto the Lord?
Let’s look to scripture to see what it has to say on how we should live out our Christian life as disciples of Jesus in this area.
What the Bible says
In the book of Colossians 3:23-24 King James Version says 23. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23 Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 24. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward and that the Master you are serving is Christ. (NLT)
Colossians 3:17 KJV says 17. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Colossians 3:17 NLT says 17. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
Colossians 3:22 ESV Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
Understanding The Context
In the New Testament the Apostle Paul wrote this deep truth to the Colossians. He wrote this while in prison, offering encouragement and guidance. He emphasizes that our identity as Christians should affect every aspect of our lives. Paul says to do EVERYTHING “as unto the Lord” and it is not just a suggestion. This is a foundational principle for living a life that honors God with our whole being.
Whatever You Do
As a disciple of Jesus, you should give everything you do your best effort. Even when working for someone that’s hard to work for, don’t do bad work just because you do not care. When no one sees your daily life, still work hard. As human beings, we want to be seen for our good works and to make a good impression. We want the accolades that come with the obvious hard work. We tend to cut corners and do shoddy work at times if we know no one is looking. Why do we care more about people’s opinions than Gods?
The question you need to ask is, am I doing this for the Lord and in Jesus’ name to bring glory to Him, even when no one is looking? Or am I doing certain tasks to make a name for myself? The human nature often prioritizes the things that will give us accolades instead of doing the tough tasks that simply need to be done. Generally we don’t want to help others out when it’s not on our agenda or not at our convenience especially if it’s not seen by anyone. But as Colossians says, you will receive a reward of an inheritance. Getting men’s applause on earth is not comparable to the reward your heavenly father will give you someday for doing things as a servant of Christ would.
Colossians 3:23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men
Working For An Audience Of One
When we understand that our ultimate accountability is to God, it changes how we approach our work. We may not always receive recognition or appreciation from others, but knowing that God sees our efforts can motivate us to do the task anyway. Working “as unto the Lord” means striving for excellence in all we do, even when we do not feel like it. And to do it not for men’s applause but to glorify God.
Finding Joy In Service
Sometimes, we find ourselves asked to do tasks that aren’t particularly enjoyable, making it difficult to approach them with singleness of heart or sincerity of heart if you please. However, serving others can truly be a blessing to both them and ourselves. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in every situation. Remember, God sees your efforts, even when time is tight and others might not notice.
It’s important to help when you can, but if you’re unable to, know that God understands. The key is not to shy away from helping simply because you may not feel like it. You are ultimately doing it for the kingdom of God.
As we do everything hearlity or diligently as unto the Lord, our actions can become a testimony to those around us. Our integrity, work ethic, and attitude can shine like a light. Then it will certainly have a big impact on our coworkers, friends, and family. People will see our commitment and the joy we find in our tasks, and they will be drawn to the source of that joy. And that joy is Christ Jesus. Be a good example to the world around you, as a follower of Jesus, by doing all things as unto the Lord.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that every part of our lives can bring you honor and glory. O Lord, help us to see the value in our daily tasks and in helping others even when it is not easy. May we be guided by your Holy Spirit and do the will of God every day. Help us in all we do to do it heartily as unto you Lord, with a joyful, happy heart that will draw others to You! In Jesus name we pray. Amen

I understand. Sometimes it is hard. It was just a gentle reminder to not do our work begrudgingly and to find joy in serving others.

This was really encouraging and convicting. So much of what we do as moms is unseen which can be hard. It reminds me to fight against resentment or bad feelings and seek My Father’s goodness and His face in my unseen work.

Awww, I’m so glad it encouraged you! Thanks for sharing that with me!

This is a wonderful reminder – when times are tough, stressful or simply emotionally/mentally draining, it can be easy to lose perspective (for me, anyway!). Actually, now that I think about it, it’s easy for me to lose perspective in general. So definitely thank you for this!

Same! This was inspired by what God was trying to show me. So I totally understand.
