Please the whole family? Really? Well……..when it comes to kids and food we all know they can be picky. If you have this predicament, no worries! I got you! I’ll walk you through the easy way to go about making this recipe for the best homemade chili soup to please everyone.
Basic Ingredients
- 2 pounds of lean ground beef
- 1 onion finely diced
- 1 packet of McCormick Original Chili Seasoning
- 2 dashes of chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of salt (or 1/3 tsp garlic powder)
- 1 teaspoon of garlic salt
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 6 cups of tomato juice
- 1 can of Brooks Mild Chili Beans
Tools Needed
- Dutch Oven or a large pot
- Strainer
- Meet chopper
- Wooden spoon
- Slow cooker
Directions
- First, peel your onion and then dice it in a chopper very fine.
- Next, in a Dutch oven or a large pot on the stovetop, brown ground beef and onions on medium-high heat using a wooden spoon or a meat chopper and drain grease once it’s finished.
- Add the rest of the ingredients into the pot, bring to a boil on medium heat, and then turn to low heat to simmer for approximately 20-30 minutes.
- It’s ready to serve. Or you can place all ingredients after browning the beef and onion in the slow cooker on low for 6 hours or until you’re ready to eat it. This will meld all the amazing flavors together. You can open it and eat it in less than 6 hours and it will still be good. These times are just for the best flavor possible. The next day, soups often taste even better because the flavors have had time to meld together beautifully.

Easy Recipe For The Best Homemade Chili Soup
This is the best homemade chili recipe. Not only is it simple and easy, it's delicious. It's a win for this busy mom for sure!
Ingredients
- 2 pounds of lean ground beef
- 1 onion finely diced
- 1 packet of McCormick Original Chili Seasoning
- 2 dashes of chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of garlic salt (or 1/3 tsp garlic powder)
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 6 cups of tomato juice
- 1 can of Brooks Mild Chili Beans ( add an extra can if you like lots of beans)
Instructions
- First, peel your onion and then dice it in a chopper very fine.
- Next, in a Dutch oven or a large pot on the stovetop, brown ground beef and onion on medium-high heat and drain once it's finished.
- You can either place all ingredients in a slow cooker at this point or add all the rest of the ingredients to your pot and bring to a boil on medium heat and then turn to low heat to simmer for approximately 20-30 minutes.
- It's ready to serve. Or once again, if you haven't placed it in a crock pot yet, you can do so now. Put it on low, allowing the flavors to meld until ready to eat.
Notes
Crock pot tips: 6-8 hours on low, or 3-4 hours on high if you prefer. I cook it all in the Dutch oven and leave it in the crock pot on warm for 8 hours.
TIP: If you do not have enough tomato juice then add 1/2 cup tomato sauce to 1/2 cup water and that will give you one cup of tomato juice.
Serve with your favorite toppings
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- A dollop of sour cream
- Soup crackers
- Serve with homemade cornbread
Let’s address the picky eaters
BEANS: We prepare the soup in the Dutch oven except for the chili beans. Before I put the soup in the crock pot we separate a bowl of regular chili for those who do not want beans and then we add the beans in with the rest of the soup in the crock pot. This allows it to meld together in the crock pot for a couple of hours. Just stick the other soup you separated out in an airtight container in the fridge to heat up when everyone else eats.
NOODLES: There are people who have never heard of pasta in their chili. I was one of those people and I married someone that prefers macaroni noodles in his soup. If you are one of those people who want noodles, heres how to add that in. Once the soup has simmered in the soup pot for about 10 minutes, add 1 cup of macaroni noodles and allow them to cook until tender. Or if you are like our family we have to boil them separately and put them in the bowl for the people who want them.
Variations For More Flavor
- You can use ground turkey to make it healthier if you are on a low-calorie diet.
- Add a green pepper finely diced – add in the green peppers with the burger while browning.
- Hot sauce- this will give it a little kick.
- 1 can of diced tomatoes for even more tomatoey flavor

I also add some (about 1 Tablespoon) oregano. Sounds strange, I know, but I had it onetime and it added depth to the flavor, so I’ve done it ever since.
