As the days grow colder and the nights grow longer, there is nothing better than a warm bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup. It has been a classic, family favorite for many years. While store bought versions are convenient, you will not want to go back to them after trying this homemade chicken noodle soup recipe.
This recipe will satisfy your craving for a good bowl of chicken noodle soup, hands down. This is guaranteed to taste way better than any store bought version of chicken noodle soup. The best part is, it is super easy and does not take a long time to make. This versatile soup is also a very good go to when someone is sick or not feeling well. Yet, you can also take it to a party or get together as well.
Here’s a fun side note, this is one of the sneaky ways I can get my kids and husband to eat veggies. They absolutely love this soup! My oldest begs me to make this for him so he can eat it in the evening and then take it for school lunch the next day! So it’s a win, win for me.
As a mama who loves to cook for her family, it is very satisfying to me to watch them go back for seconds or be disappointed when the leftovers run out. It lets me know that I’ve succeeded in making something they love. And that thrills this mamas heart!

Steps To Make Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
- STEP 1: In a large pot with a lid pour in 6 cups of chicken broth.
- STEP 2: Next, Cut carrots into bite sized pieces until you have 1 cup. Put this in your pot.
- STEP 3: Cut celery into small pieces and put in the food processor and chop until finely ground. Measure out one cup and put in your pot.
- STEP 4: Open both cans of canned chicken and make sure all the big pieces are shredded up with a fork. Add them to your pot
- STEP 5: Next, add in dried parsley, better than bouillon, black pepper, and onion salt and stir together.
- STEP 6: Bring these ingredients to a boil and then reduce heat. Cover the pot with lid, allowing it to simmer for 10-15 minutes. I usually allow it to go the full 15 minutes. This step will vary depending on how large the carrots are cut. If they are thicker they will take a little longer to cook.
- STEP 7: Add egg noodles and let them cook for an additional 10 minutes or until noodles are tender. You can always speed up the process by covering with a lid. Once finished, ladle up the delicious goodness and serve.

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
Ingredients
- 6 cups of chicken broth
- 2 cans of cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup thinly sliced carrots
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 1 dash of onion salt
- 2 cans of chicken breast
- 2 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon roasted chicken better than bouillon
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 3 cups of uncooked egg noodles
Instructions
- On a cutting board slice carrots into thin bite size pieces.
- On a cutting board, cut up celery and put in a food chopper until finely chopped. (Chop to your desired size.)
- Open up the two cans of canned chicken. Take a fork and make sure the big pieces are shredded better.
- In a large pot with a lid combine
- 6 cups of chicken broth
- 2 cans of cream of chicken
- 1 cup of thinly sliced carrots
- 1 cup of celery
- 1 dash of onion salt
- 2 cans of canned chicken (or two chicken breast previously boiled and shredded)
- 2 teaspoons of parsley
- 1 teaspoon of roasted chicken better than bouillon
- 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
2. Cover and allow this to boil for 10-15minutes. Cook time will vary depending on how large your carrots are.
3. Once your carrots are cooked, add the 3 cups of egg noodles and let them cook for an additional 10 minutes until the egg noodles are tender. You can speed up the process by covering your pot with a lid if you like.
4. Once egg noodles are tender, your homemade chicken noodle soup is ready to serve!
Notes
*You can enhance the flavor of your chicken noodle soup by using a whole onion instead of onion salt
* When reheating your homemade chicken noodle soup from the fridge add water to the soup because the noodles soak up the broth.
* A fun tip: If you serve the chicken noodle soup immediately add a cube of ice to your bowl so you can eat it faster.
Variations:
- You can use one can of cream of chicken instead of two.
- Try using a whole onion chopped up fine to enhance the flavor even more. (my kids don’t like the onion as strong so I go with the 2 dashes of onion salt)
- You could make your own homemade egg noodles from scratch.
- You could also make your own cream of chicken from scratch.
- If you do not have, or do not want to use canned chicken, boil one and a half pounds to two pounds of chicken breasts. Two pounds of chicken will make it more meaty. The more chicken the more protein for your family. Use whatever the amount of chicken that works best for your family.
Notes:
- When reheating your homemade chicken noodle soup from the fridge, add a little water because the noodles soak up the broth as they sit.
- Don’t forget the carrots may take a little longer to cook if they are not cut thin.
- If you like thicker pieces of celery in your soup, do not chop them as fine in the chopper. (I have to chop our celery super fine to disguise it for my kids.)
I hope you try this soup and fall in love with it like our little family has. It is quick and easy to throw together on a cold blustery day and it will warm the soul.
